Adventitious bursitis of the foot

Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

The patient presents with right plantar pain and a palpable lump overlying the first metatarsal head.

Patient Data

Age: 70 years
Gender: Female
ultrasound

Limited regional ultrasound corresponding to the 1st MTP joint, plantar surface, revealed a lobulated, fluid-filled cavity measuring 24.9 x 8.07 x 19.5 mm in size. There are numerous intralesional bands. The epicenter of the lesion is the medial eminence of the first metatarsal head.

Case Discussion

Sonographic appearance of typical adventitious bursitis and likely synovitis of the right 1st metatarsal head in the classic anatomical location adjacent / overlying the medial eminence. There is a cystic lesion with bands or "strings" with features suggestive of associated synovitis.
