Amoebic liver abscess

Patient Data

Age: 45 years
Gender: Female

In the left lobe of the liver is a large lobulated hypodense mass with some faint peripheral enhancement. It measures up to 9.2 cm with internal density of approximately 40 HU. In liver segment VII is a smaller 1.2 cm hypodensity. Reduced portal venous phase attenuation is noted within the left lobe of the liver. Periportal oedema. Portal veins are patent. No lymphadenopathy. 

Case Discussion

The patient underwent ultrasound-guided percutaneous drainage with pus aspirated. Entamoeba histolytica PCR was positive for both the liver aspirate and on faecal sample.
