Amoebic typhlitis with liver abscess

Elderly lady with chronic diarrhea and vague abdominal pain.

Patient Data

Age: 60 years
Gender: Female

There is a large abscess in the left lobe of the liver. 

Diffuse circumferential intestinal wall thickening noted involving the terminal ilium, caecum and the ascending colon with surrounding fat stranding.

Variable amount of free fluid within the peritoneum.

Bilateral mild pleural effusion with basal atelectasis. 

Case Discussion

The stool smear report of this case confirms presence of amoebic cysts in the sample.

The hepatic abscess was tapped and the pus sample was sent for microscopy and culture-sensitivity and turned out to be sterile.
