Case contributed by Ashesh Ishwarlal Ranchod
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

The patient has known nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. There is an incidental known renal failure on heamodialysis.

Patient Data

Age: 60 years
Gender: Male

The chest X-ray confirms an Amplatzer™Amulet™ left atrial appendage (LAA) occluding device.

The device is barely discernable on the routine frontal view, only identified by the dual radio-opaque markers.

It can therefore be missed or underappreciated on solitary frontal or portable supine imaging due to poor identification of the device.

The device is best identified on the lateral view and reverse windows on which the mesh structure becomes discernable and easily identifiable.

Case Discussion

This percutaneous transcatheter deployed device is made from a nickel and titanium alloy and is MRI conditional and can safely be scanned at 1.5 and 3.0 Tesla strength.

It causes some MR image artifact for a distance of 20 mm's radially, confirmed on non-clinical testing.

This device is a non-pharmacological alternative to oral anticoagulation in high-risk patients.
