The appendix lies within an indirect right inguinal hernia. There is no wall thickening of the appendix, but some fat stranding around it is noted. No left-sided hernia. Multiple simple bilateral renal cysts.
Case Discussion
They underwent an elective hernia repair during which the appendix was not in the hernia sac so was not removed. The presence of an appendix within an inguinal hernia sac is known as an Amyand hernia. Fat stranding adjacent to the appendix is not necessarily due to primary appendicitis but could be from entrapment within the hernia sac.
