Amyand hernia with acute appendicitis

Presentation

Sudden onset pain in the abdominal and right inguinal region.

Patient Data

Age: 50 years
Gender: Male
ultrasound

US exam reveals a right inguinal hernia containing an aperistaltic, non-compressible, dilated appendix with diffuse wall thickening with a 7 mm outer diameter.

Case Discussion

The patient underwent surgery and subsequently confirmed an Amyand hernia and an acutely inflamed appendix within the right inguinal canal. A histopathological review of the appendix confirmed acute appendicitis. Amyand hernia is a rare form of inguinal hernia in which the vermiform appendix is located within the hernial sac.
