The MRI reveals hyperintensity of the corticospinal tracts on T2-weighted (T2W) and FLAIR images, along with hypointensity of the precentral gyrus, also known as the motor band sign.
The MRI morphology results show no abnormalities in size.
Case Discussion
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a progressive, fatal disease characterised by a motor neurone disorder. Early detection and intervention hold immense significance due to ALS's irreversible progression.
Besides the typical MRI characteristics like hyperintensity along corticospinal tracts or motor band sign, recent studies suggest possible atrophy of frontal and temporal brain volumes.
Based on an examination, the neurologist suspects ALS in this case, and the MRI results strongly support the diagnosis. However, the morphology appears normal, possibly due to the early stage of the disease or a decrease that remains within the normalisation range.
