Presentation

Ultra low anterior resection for rectal cancer.

Patient Data

Age: 50
Gender: Male

Gastrografin enema

Modality: Fluoroscopy

Anastomotic sutures are noted projecting between the coccyx and acetabulum. 

Rectally administered contrast has leaked into the presacral space, from the posterior aspect of the anastomotic suture line. 

Case Discussion

The rate of anastomotic leak for all colorectal surgery is ~3% with ultra-low anterior resections (ULAR) having the highest rate of anastomotic leaks at ~7% 1.
