Aneurysm of the portal venous system

Presentation

RUQ pain, fever, Murphy's sign positive. Incidental finding on US for CT follow-up.

Patient Data

Age: 55 years
Gender: Female

CT scan showed a 2 x 3 cm aneurysmal dilatation of the left portal vein

Case Discussion

Aneurysms of the portal vein are extremely rare and represent only 3% of all aneurysms of the venous system. Both congenital and acquired causes have been proposed. Portal hypertension could be contributory but is not essential to the development of portal venous system aneurysms.
