Ankle fracture - Weber B

Case contributed by Assoc Prof Frank Gaillard

Fell and twisted ankle.

Patient Data

Age: Adult

An appropriately positioned x-ray reveals an oblique fibular fracture reaching the level of the joint space, consistent with a Weber B fracture. Note how depending on the obliquity of the film, the fracture may appear to be a Weber C.

Case Discussion

Weber B fracture of the ankle, with the medial fracture line at the level of the joint space. It is important to remember that the classification is aimed at predicting tibiofibular instability. As such where the fracture is on the lateral side of the fibula is largely irrelevant.
