Anterior cruciate ligament mucoid degeneration

Presentation

Pain at posterior aspect of left knee. History of previous left knee surgery.

Patient Data

Age: 40 years
Gender: Male
MRI

Left knee joint

Diffuse thickening and signal alteration of the anterior cruciate ligament with maintained outlines, reflecting mucoid degeneration.

Horizontal tear of the medial meniscus reaching the articular surface.

Case Discussion

Features of mucoid degeneration of the anterior cruciate ligament; the ligament is thickened and ill-defined with a "celery stalk" appearance and increased signal on all MRI sequences. Intact fibers are best seen on T2 weighted sequences.
