Presentation
The patient had left ankle twist since 4 weeks, presented with left ankle pain on the anterior aspect.
Patient Data
The symptomatic side anterior inferior tibiofibular ligament is hypoechoic, thickened except at tibial attachment site where the ligament shows thinning. There is mild effusion in the anterior recess of the ankle joint. Anterior talofibular ligament and calcaneofibular ligament show normal echopattern.
Asymptomatic side anterior inferior tibiofibular ligament was examined for comparison. It shows normal echopattern.
Case Discussion
Ultrasound findings favor partial thickness tear of an anterior inferior tibiofibular ligament at the tibial attachment site. Grade I injury is a sprain. Grade II injury is partial thickness tear, as in this case. Grade III injury is a complete tear.
