Anterior rectocoele and rectal intussusception

Suspected rectal prolapse. Normal ultrasound and colonoscopy.

Patient Data

Age: 50
Gender: Female

The fluoroscopic images taken upon bearing up and bearing down demonstrate:

  • appropriate elevation of the anorectal angle on bearing up
  • appropriate descent of the pelvic floor and anorectal junction on bearing down

The fluoroscopic images taken upon defaecating demonstrate:

The rectum emptied well with only a small amount of contrast remaining in the sigmoid colon and rectum.

Case Discussion

This case is a demonstration of a small-moderate anterior rectocoele and recto-recto intussusception. Anterior rectocoele is more common in advanced age and with multiparity.
