Anterior talofibular ligament bony avulsion - pediatric

Presentation

Right ankle injury one day before the presentation. Complaining of lateral ankle region pain, swelling, and difficulty in walking.

Patient Data

Age: 5 years
Gender: Male

There is a vertically oriented linear bone flake located between the lateral malleolus and the talus in the AP view of the ankle. There is soft tissue density in the anterior ankle joint region.

Anterior recess of the ankle joint shows mild effusion. There is a bony avulsion of the talar attachment of the anterior talofibular ligament. The ligament itself shows continuity.

The anterior inferior tibiofibular ligament, calcaneofibular ligament, bifurcate ligament and dorsal talonavicular ligament are normal.

Case Discussion

The case shows a bony avulsion of the anterior talofibular ligament from the talus along with anterior ankle joint recess effusion.
