Anterior talofibular ligament injury

Ankle twist - 4 wks back. 3 wks of immobilization after injury. C/o peristant pain on lateral aspect of ankle. Radiograph of ankle - No fracture.

Patient Data

Age: 23 yrs
Gender: Female

As radiograph was normal ( not uploaded, no copy right ); USG was done for lateral ankle pain evaluation.

  • Symptomatic side - 

-- Anterior talo-fibular ligament

    - hypoechoic, thicker.  No fluid cleft. No volume loss.

    - No overlying fat depression into ligement.


-- Calcano-fibular ligament 

    - Normal fibrillary echopattern


-- Anterior tibio-fibular ligament 

   - Normal fibrillary echopattern.


  • Asymptomatic side 

​-- Anterior talo-fibular ligament

  - Normal fibrillary echopattern. 


Case Discussion

Findings favour anterior talo-fibular ligament sprain.
