Left ankle inversion injury a few months ago. Complaining of lateral ankle region pain.

Anterior talofibular ligament injury

Anterior talofibular ligament
- There is a corticated bone in the proximal end of the ligament.
- There is no significant movement of this ossicle with planter and dorsal flexion of the foot.
- There is a discontinuity of ligament at the distal end.
- The residual ligament is thinner, hypoechoic.
Anterior tibiofibular ligament
- Intact, normal.
Calcaneofibular ligament
- Hypoechoic
- Thickened
- Continuity maintained.
Peroneal tendons
- Intact.
- Normal echopattern.
- No tenosynovitis.
Case Discussion
A young male had a left ankle inversion injury a few months back followed by persistent pain in the lateral ankle region. The patient presented with ankle radiograph (no copyright, not uploaded ) showing focal corticated bone just caudal to the lateral malleolus. Ultrasound revealed an ossicle in the proximal end of the anterior talofibular ligament and complete tear of the distal end of the ligament. There was associated calcaneofibular ligament sprain.
