Anterior talofibular ligament injury

Right ankle inversion injury with lateral ankle region pain. The patient had injury about 9 days back. He was referred for anterior talofibular ligament evaluation.

Patient Data

Age: 15 years
Gender: Male

There is no fracture/dislocation/ bone lesion.


Symptomatic side :

  • Anterior talofibular ligament       - Thick, hypoechoic, continuity maintained
  • Anterior tibiofibular ligament      - Intact, normal.
  • Calcano-fibular ligament             - Intact, normal.
  • Peroneal tendons                         - Intact. No tenosynovitis.
  • Ankle joint                                      - No effusion in anterior recess.

Asymptomatic side :

  • Anterior talo-fibular ligament     - Intact, normal.

Case Discussion

An adolescent boy presented with right ankle inversion injury about 9 days back. Ultrasound findings favor anterior talofibular ligament sprain.
