Anterior talofibular ligament rupture

Presentation

Acute ankle sprain.

Patient Data

Age: 35
Gender: Male
Modality: MRI

The anterior talofibular ligament is lax, and is discontinuous at its talar insertion. There is increased signal in the calcaneofibular ligament. At the lateral talar dome there is full thickness cartilage loss with underlying bone oedema/contusion. 

Case Discussion

Along with the anterior talofibular ligament rupture, there is also partial rupture of the calcaneofibular ligament and an osteochondral injury of the lateral talar dome.
