Aplastic maxillary sinuses

Presentation

Nasal obstruction and chronic headache.

Patient Data

Age: 65 years
Gender: Male

Aplastic both maxillary sinuses as well as their drainage units with compensation and hypertrophy of bony maxilla bilaterally. The remaining sinuses show variable degrees of pan-sinusitis. Obliterated sphenoethmoidal recess bilaterally. Mildly deviated bony nasal septum to the left.

Case Discussion

Maxillary sinus aplasia is extremely rare, whereas maxillary sinus hypoplasia is a well-known clinical entity. Maxillary sinus hypoplasia is reported in 1.7–10.4% of patients with sinonasal symptoms.
