Appendiceal carcinoma

Presentation

Right iliac fossa pain and vague mass on palpation.

Patient Data

Age: 85 years
Gender: Female
CT

Mass arising at the base of the appendix (separate from the ileocecal valve), expanding the lumen and causing the distal appendix to be distended and fluid-filled.

Case Discussion

Primary appendiceal tumors tend to be mucinous adenocarcinomas and are very rare.  They are usually asymptomatic and present late with diffuse peritoneal metastases, i.e. pseudomyxoma peritonei.
