Presentation
Patient with pain in right iliac fossa a week ago.
Patient Data
Tubular hypoechoic image with well-defined margins in the right lumbar region.
We observed significant distension with fluid and mucus of the appendix, which presents retro-cecal situation, with a diameter of 4,5 cm, associated with thickening and infiltration of fat along its base, and training small adjacent collection, measuring 3,5 cm, compatible with acute inflammatory process.
Identified in the right hepatic lobe is a rounded mass lesion with intense uptake in the venous phase after administration of intravenous contrast, with central stellate scar without enhancement, measuring 6.0 x 5.0 cm lesion, consistent with focal nodular hyperplasia.
Intra-operative photograph.
Case Discussion
Mucocele of the appendix is a result of chronic obstruction of the appendix that can be caused by benign or malignant lesions. Typically seen as a round or oval cystic mass with a thin wall, near the end of the cecum; there may be curvilinear mural calcifications.
