Appendiceal stumpitis

Blind-ending tubular structure arising form the cecal pole with inflammation in the adjacent fat and edematous swelling of the surrounding illeal loops. Looks like typical appendicitis but the patient has had previous appendectomy so represents inflammation in the residual appendiceal stump (thus the term "stumpitis").
Case Discussion
Stumpitis occurs when there is a residual stump of appendix that becomes inflamed, i.e. the stump is not buried or inverted back into the cecal lumen with a purse-string suture as was traditional with open appendectomy.
