Appendix mucocele

Case contributed by Dr Hein Els

Had recent vaginal hysterectomy. Gelatinous ascites drained during surgery.

Patient Data

Age: 45
Gender: Female

Dilated fluid filled appendix in the right lower quadrant. The wall is thin and contains a focus of hyperechogenicity with twinkle artifact. Surrounding fat is normal. No peri-appendiceal fluid or collection.

Dilated fluid filled appendix with a thin wall and small mural calcification. The surrounding fat is normal. Small volume of hypodense ascites.

Case Discussion

Dilated fluid filled appendix with a mural calcification and the history of gelatinous ascites highly suggestive of an appendix mucocele
