Ascariasis - gastrointestinal

Case contributed by Michael P Hartung
Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Abdominal pain, hematuria.

Patient Data

Age: 40 years
Gender: Male

Thin tubular filling defects in the gastric antrum, duodenal sweep, and jejunum. Urinary bladder decompressed with foley catheter.

Case Discussion

There are several worms in the gastric antrum, duodenal sweep and proximal small bowel. Ascariasis has a characteristic appearance of thin tubular defects in the lumen which contain air, fluid, or oral contrast centrally. A large burden of worms can place the patient at risk for obstruction. The cause of hematuria is not clear but could be related to GU ascariasis.
