Atrial septal defect complicated by Eisenmenger syndrome

Presentation

Fatigue, dyspnoea, chest pain and cough for several years.

Patient Data

Age: 10 years
Gender: Female
  • marked cardiomegaly
  • large atrial septal defect
  • significantly dilated right atrium, right ventricle, pulmonary trunk and right and left pulmonary arteries.
  • enlarged pulmonary vessels
  • reflux of contrast material to the inferior vena cava and hepatic veins
  • air space consolidation in right lung lower lobe

Case Discussion

Untreated atrial septal defect (ASD) can lead to pulmonary arterial hypertension and Eisenmenger syndrome like in this case.
