Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease

Presentation

Headache and recently diagnosed hypertension and renal impairment.

Patient Data

Age: 55 years
Gender: Female

Both kidneys appeared enlarged in size, reaching up to 18 cm in length, with multiple cysts of variable sizes through the whole parenchyma; some of the cysts show wall calcification.

Loss of normal renal echo pattern intervening between cysts, poorly discriminated renal architecture, and loss of corticomedullary differentiation.

There are also multiple cysts of variable sizes involving the liver.

Case Discussion

Findings include hypertension and renal impairment with ultrasound findings consistent with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease associated with simple hepatic cysts.

Usually, patients present with hypertension that commonly ends in renal failure at the age of 60 years old. They need further evaluation of associated abnormalities like brain aneurysm, family screening, and genetic counseling.
