Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (gross pathology)

Case contributed by John Hayman
Diagnosis certain

Nephrectomy specimen showing the kidney markedly enlarged (craniocaudal length = 30 cm) by innumerable cysts.

The cut surface of the specimen shows these cysts replacing the normal renal parenchyma with only thin smooth septa between them. Some cysts appear to contain very dark material consistent with prior haemorrhage.

Case Discussion

A typical appearance of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease.
