Avascular necrosis: femoral head

Bilateral hip pain

Patient Data

Age: 59
Gender: Male

There are severe sclerosis and multiple subchondral cysts in the right femoral head, and acetabular impingement with the collapse of the right femoral head, and joint space narrowing. Mild sclerosis is present within the left femoral head. There is no joint space narrowing on the left side.

Findings seen on the x-ray are further delineated on CT.

Case Discussion

This case suggests avascular necrosis of the right femoral head, grade VI, as well as the left femoral head, grade II (Steinberg staging)
