Avascular necrosis of the hip - crescent sign appearance

The study demonstrates advanced osteoarthritic change at the right femoral head which shows loss of normal sphericity; there are a loss of articular space and subchondral cyst.
Less marked osteoarthritis is present at the left hip.
The oblique projection (not real frog-leg projection) shows the presence of a linear area of subchondral lucency at the left femoral head in keeping with "crescent sign"
