Avulsion fracture coracoid process

Case contributed by Dr Chris O'Donnell

Fell from a horse onto the right shoulder. Now pain and deformity.

Patient Data

Age: 40
Gender: Female

Dislocated (upward) AC joint with a displaced fracture of the coracoid process at its base. Note that the coraco-clavicular ligament is intact (arrow).

Case Discussion

The coraco-clavicular ligament remains intact thus is stronger than the bone of the coracoid causing it to be uvulsed. This is unusual in AC dislocation, where the ligament usually ruptures first
