Pelvis and hip radiographs revealed a fracture of the great trochanter of the right femur. The fragment is consistent with the insertion of the gluteus medius and gluteus minimus tendons. The injury is most likely an avulsion fracture of the great trochanter.
Case Discussion
Avulsion fractures of the hip are more common in skeletally immature patients. However, some elderly patients rarely present these after withstanding a fall. In these cases, a prior history of abductors tendinopathy is usually present.
