Azygos continuation of the inferior vena cava

Case contributed by Mohammad Taghi Niknejad
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Work up for chronic abdominal pain. Incidental finding.

Patient Data

Age: 55 years
Gender: Male

The absence of the hepatic segment of the IVC with azygos continuation is seen. The imaged portion of the azygos vein is dilated and runs in its normal retrocrural course. The post hepatic part of the IVC drains only the hepatic veins into the right atrium.

A 12 mm thin walled nonenhanced cyst is noted at the pancreatic head.

A tiny stone less than 3 mm is present in the lower calyx of the left kidney.

The prostate gland is enlarged.

Case Discussion

Features on CT images are consistent with azygos continuation of the IVC, which is an uncommon vascular anomaly and is a cause of a dilated azygos vein.
