Azygos fissure and azygos lobe

Patient Data

Age: 70 years
Gender: Male

Incidentally noted as an anatomical variant the azygos fissure is seen in the apical segment of the right upper lobe harboring the azygos vein within with consequent formation of the azygos lobe. Focal areas of ground-glass opacities noted implicating the anterior segment of the right upper lobe, posterior and anterior segment of the left lower lobe. Small calcified foci are noted implicating the right upper lobe as well as the posterior segment of the left lower lobe likely representing the sequel of old granulomatous infection.Atheromatous calcification of the aortic arch..

Case Discussion

The azygos lobe is an incidental entity and found in 1% of anatomical specimens. It is twice as common in males as females.
