Azygos lobe and fissure

Case contributed by Dr Safwat Mohammad Almoghazy

Presentation

Known sigmoid cancer, undergoing staging.

Patient Data

Age: 30 years
Gender: Male
X-ray

Azygos lobe is incidentally noted (normal variant). Otherwise, the chest x-ray is unremarkable, with no suspicious lesion.

Case Discussion

This is a normal anatomic variant of the right upper lobe due to invagination of the azygos vein and pleura during fetal development. It is not a true accessory lobe as it does not have its own bronchus.
