Baastrup syndrome

Case contributed by Dr Levente István Lánczi

Long time history of lumbar and lower extremity pain.

Patient Data

Age: 67 year old
Gender: Female

Spondylotic and spondyloarthrotic signs on the lumbar spine.

Anterolisthesis of 4th lumbar vertebra.

Contact of adjacent spinous processes.

CT proves the "kissing" spines, with advanced degenerative signs, inculding vacuum phenomena between 2nd and 3rd lumbar vertebral spinous processes and necrotic signs between 3rd and 4th lumbar vertebral spinous processes.

Case Discussion

Kissing spinous processes can be regular additional findings on degenerative lumbar spine imaging studies and can cause lower back pain together with other lesions - such as in this case with anterolisthesis, spondylosis and spondyloarthritis combined.
