Presentation
Back pain.
Patient Data
Degenerative phenomena of the interspinous joints. Degenerative phenomena of bilateral interapophysial joints. Vertebral bodies of preserved shape and height. The posterior walls are adequately aligned. Multisegmentary anterolateral osteophytes.
Decrease in height of the intervertebral space L4-L5 and L5-S1 associated with sclerosis of the
adjacent vertebral platforms.
Case Discussion
Baastrup's syndrome or lumbar interspinous arthrosis consists of a degenerative process related to the development of a pseudoarticulation between the spinous processes and the appearance of osteoarthritic phenomena.
It is a condition in which contiguous spinous processes approach each other and rub together, producing mechanical overload and changes in the bony surfaces. It occurs most frequently between the third, fourth and fifth lumbar vertebrae.
