Ball and socket ankle joint

Case contributed by Dr Henry Knipe

Lateral ankle pain post fall.

Patient Data

Age: 60 years
Gender: Male

Ball and socket ankle joint with associated extensive tarsal coalition. Absent and rudimentary rays are present.

Undisplaced oblique fracture through the distal malleolus.

Case Discussion

This case has an almost full hand of associations (tarsal coalition and absent rays) of a ball and socket ankle joint. Despite the impressive congenital anomalies, it is important to spot any pathology, which in this case is a distal fibular fracture.
