- PS: performance status, staged 0-4, similar to the ECOG performance status
- N and M: nodal and metastatic staging, as described in IIIa
- portal pressure obtained through hepatic vein catheterization
- HVPG ≥10 or higher defines clinically significant portal hypertension (also indicated by the presence of varices or portosystemic collaterals)
