Base of thumb metacarpal fracture

Painful and swollen thumb following an awkward fall.

Patient Data

Age: 30 years
Gender: Male

A minimally displaced and non-angulated transverse fracture through the base of the first metacarpal bone is demonstrated without involvement of the articular surface. 

Case Discussion

This case illustrates typical appearances of a mildly displaced transverse epibasal fracture of the base of the first metacarpal bone. It is also known as a pseudo-Bennett fracture. He went on to have conservative management.
