Basilar invagination

MRI done 3 days following head injury.

Patient Data

Age: 76
Gender: Male

Tip of the odontoid is 5mm above the level of Foramen magnum (MacRae's Line). The pro-atlas is seen to articulate with inferior margin of clivus with large osteophytes at this neo-articulation.

The transverse ligament is thickened and is indenting the brainstem. No abnormal signal intensity in the brainstem.

Incidental detection of basilar invagination.

Patient incidentally had "Kissing carotids"

Final diagnosis: Basilar invagination
