Presentation

Trauma.

Patient Data

Age: 30 years
Gender: Male

An 8mm hyper dense foreign body with beam hardening (metal) artifact is noted at right upper anterior chest wall, within the lateral aspect of right pectoralis major muscle. There are also ring artifacts.

Case Discussion

CT artifacts are common and can occur for various reasons. Knowledge of these artifacts is important because they can mimic pathology (e.g. partial volume artifact) or can degrade image quality to non-diagnostic levels.
