Benign epithelial or sebaceous cyst

Case contributed by Dr Chris O'Donnell

Mass in soft tissues overlying the left shoulder blade ?lipoma clinically

Patient Data

Age: 40 years
Gender: Male

Well-defined ovoid mass in the subcutaneous fat: solid, whorled internal appearance with minimal peripheral enhancement

Solid-appearing mass without blood flow on Doppler analysis and subsequent ultrasound-guided biopsy.

Case Discussion

Concern on MRI and US regarding the possibility of a soft tissue sarcoma or even neurofibroma.  On percutaneous biopsy the internal material was keratin with normal skin structures on the margins, typical of an epithelial cyst.
