Presentation
Right arm fast bowler (cricket) had a jerk to left thigh while bowling about 2 weeks back. He had posterior mid-thigh region pain. After 2 weeks of rest, he bowled again and the pain recurred. Referred for ultrasound evaluation of hamstrings.
Patient Data
Biceps femoris muscle - tendon: There is an interruption of the biceps femoris long head muscle fibers which is filled with fluid (about 40 x 30 x 5 mm). There is adjacent intramuscular edema. An extramuscular curved fluid rim is present favoring disruption of the muscle sheath. There is edema superficial to muscle in subcutaneous plane.
Short head muscle is normal. The distal tendon is normal.
Semimembranosus and semitendinosus muscles and tendons were normal (not uploaded).
Case Discussion
Ultrasound findings favor biceps femoris (hamstring) injury in a cricketer.
