Bifid median nerve and persistent median artery of the forearm

Case contributed by Dr Charudutt Jayant Sambhaji

Suspected median nerve compression.

Patient Data

Age: 25 years
Gender: Male

US and color doppler revealed a bifid median nerve in the distal forearm and a intervening persistent median artery of the forearm.

Case Discussion

When bifid median nerves are often accompanied by a persistent median artery of the forearm it is located between the two nerve bundles.

A bifid median nerve is important to recognize to avoid damage during an carpal tunnel release surgery.
