Presentation

Painful left big toe after rock fell on toe yesterday. On exam: wound and tenderness of the distal phalanx of the left big toe.

Patient Data

Age: 30 years
Gender: Male
x-ray
  • comminuted fracture at the base of the left big toe with intra-articular extension
  • no lytic or sclerotic lesion
  • no bony erosion
  • soft tissue swelling

Case Discussion

An example of an intra-articular fracture of the distal phalanx of the big toe. This can lead to osteoarthritis of the affected joint.
