Presentation
Cough with chest pain
Patient Data
Bilateral supernumerary ribs originating from the 7th cervical vertebrae. The left cervical rib is rudimentary.
Lungs are clear.
Cardiomediastinal contour is within normal limits.
There is mild dorsal scoliosis, convex to the left.
Case Discussion
Cervical ribs are accessory ribs arising from the 7th cervical vertebrae.
They are an anatomical variant discovered most times incidentally during a routine chest x-ray study.
They are commoner in females, bilateral in 80% though often asymmetric and occur in about 0.5% of the population 1.
They are usually asymptomatic but can occasionally be a cause of thoracic outlet syndrome when they compress the brachial plexus and/or subclavian vessels.
