Bilateral temporomandibular joint dislocation

Case contributed by David Holcdorf
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Jaw pain post big yawn. Unable to close mouth.

Patient Data

Age: 50 years
Gender: Female

Anterior dislocation of both temporomandibular joints. No fracture.

Case Discussion

This illustrates the difficulty in recognising a perfectly symmetric abnormality. The mandibular condyles are both sitting anterior to the articular eminences and are not in the mandibular fossae. The jaw was subsequently relocated with the alleviation of symptoms.
