  • Bipartite distal epiphysis of 5th metatarsal bone.
  • On AP view, cortical bending is also seen at the base of proximal phalanx of 2nd toe suggestive of fracture.

Normal ossification of the distal epiphysis of 5th metatarsal bone at 8 years of age in the same patient.

Case Discussion

Secondary (epiphyseal or apophyseal) ossification centers may radiographically appear to ossify from multiple sites and this is a normal variant of anatomy. In most patients, radiographs of these patients become normal years later.
