Blooming artifact (ultrasound)

Case contributed by Bálint Botz
Diagnosis not applicable
ultrasound

The first image and colour Doppler cine recording of the CCA shows signal extending beyond the anatomical limits of the vessel distal to the transducer, due to the inappropriately high colour gain (G78).

The second image and recording was taken after the colour gain was decreased (G42), but no other parameters were altered. There are only minimal extraluminal colour artifacts visible, and only due to vessel pulsation.

Case Discussion

Typical appearance of the ultrasonic blooming artifact, that can obscure partial narrowing (e.g. atherosclerotic plaques, partial thrombosis).
