Blount disease

Presentation

Leg bowing.

Patient Data

Age: 9 years
Gender: Female

Both knees

x-ray

Skeletally immature patient.

Growth plate irregularity and is thinner at its medial aspect with depressed adjacent metaphysis depicting beak-like protuberance involving the tibia bilaterally.

Mild bilateral coxa vara is noted.

Otherwise, there is no evidence of osteolytic or osteoblastic lesions.

Case Discussion

This is 9 year old female referred to an orthopedic physician due to leg bowing, and both knees frontal view radiograph in standing position was requested demonstrating mild bilateral tibial coxa vara with wedge-shaped epiphysis and beaking of adjacent metaphysis indicating Blount disease. Bowing of the legs occurs secondary to avascular necrosis of the medial tibial condyle.
